Nursing homes often place the economic bottom line above the needs and rights of nursing home residents. As a result, many nursing homes are chronically understaffed, resulting in inadequate and substandard attention to residents' basic needs. The foreseeable results of this situation are malnutrition (because of lack of staff time to feed and hydrate residents), resident falls, pressure sores, and other injuries directly related to lack of adequate care.

While our office encourages family members to file complaints with the nursing home itself and with the governmental agencies who are supposed to investigate incidents of neglect or abuse, the fines levied against nursing homes for complaints which are determined to be valid are most times inadequate and viewed by the nursing home industry as the "cost of doing business". Additionally, nursing home fines are often waived in their entirety if the home files a "Plan of Correction" with the Health Department within a specific amount of time.
